We all know what’s coming when the shower begins taking a little longer to drain. A few days later, that minor funky smell is becoming more pungent, and before you know it, there’s a tiny pool of water at your feet when you turn on shower.

All of these are the beginning signs of a clogged shower drain, which could become a big problem if you don’t take care of it right away. Whether it’s because your luscious locks got knotted in the drain or soap scum and hard water deposits built up over time, it’s important to unclog your drain before any serious problems occur. To give you a few new ideas for unclogging your shower drain, here are a few of Warner Service’s best suggestions:

  1. Do the baking soda and vinegar trick. This mixture will fizz like an elementary school science project, so after you mix 1/3 cup of baking soda with a 1/3 cup of white vinegar, quickly pour it down your clogged shower drain. Let it sit for at least one hour (overnight results are the best), and flush it down with hot water.
  2. Carefully use boiling water. Because your shower is most likely upstairs while the kitchen stove is downstairs, use all of the care in the world when transporting boiling water up a set of steps. When you get to the clogged shower drain, pour the boiling water in 2 or 3 sets, waiting several seconds between each pour. If there’s water left after 3 sets, congratulate yourself with a piping hot cup of tea.
  3. Use dish detergent and boiling water. Again, please be careful with the transport of boiling water. Pour a ¼ cup of dish detergent down the clogged shower drain. It will act as a lubricant to help break up any greasy residue. After that, pour the boiling water down and get your drain snake ready.
  4. Bring in the big guns. We’re talking about your arms, people. After you expertly remove the shower drain cover with a screwdriver, put on some rubber gloves and get any initial residue out with your fingers. Then, grab a pair of scissors and cut tiny notches into a plastic zip tie. Insert the zip tie into the drain and flick your wrist to catch any excess hair clogs. Pull them out, don’t throw up, and repeat the process until the zip tie comes up clean. Use tip 1 to get a deeper clean, and then replace the drain cover.
  5. Call in the pros. If your shower clog is a little too much, call in the pros. Specialists, like the experts at Warner Service, will have your shower up and running smoothly again in no time.

Using off-the-shelf drain cleaners can be harmful to your pipes and the environment due to the caustic chemicals. All of these methods are more eco-friendly, and they’re less expensive than paying for grocery store drain cleaners.
