Dacula-Furnace-Repair

Remember last year’s winter? How, all of the sudden, freezing temperatures and multiple snow and ice storms plagued the Mid-Atlantic area? Maryland weather is anything but predictable, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be prepared when it does strike! Warner Service encourages you to test your heating system this year during fall so that you will have time to make repairs if they are necessary. That’s why we put together this 4-step guide to show you how to test your heating system to be ready for the coming cold!

Check that the emergency switch is in the “on” position
The emergency switch on your furnace activates what is called “second stage heating” which comes from the inside of your home, rather than the heat pump outside. Usually, you would only use emergency heat in the case that your heat pump is not working. When not turned on manually, the emergency heat is used automatically with your heat pump when needed. However, this emergency switch will make sure that your second stage heating is activated so that you can test it without having to wait for the cold to activate it, making sure that you are testing all parts of the heating system.

Turn up the thermostat at least 10 degrees higher than the actual room temperature
It is usually best to test your heating system on a cool or cold day so that your home is not overly hot. Ideally, a 60 degree Fall day will be perfect. Be sure to have all windows closed while the furnace is running to make sure that it is doing it’s job. However, feel free to reopen them after the testing is done to return your home to a normal temperature.

Wait
Within a few minutes, your heating system should activate. It may take longer than normal because it has not been used for a few months, but ideally after about 10 minutes you should begin to hear the system working. Wait another 30 minutes to see if the home is warmed. Test the vents to make sure warm air is coming through.

If the equipment doesn’t start up, reset your furnace
Press the reset button on your furnace only once. After, retest your heating system. If it will still not work, try these tips before calling an HVAC specialist:

Check the emergency switch again
Check your circuit breaker to see if any circuits have been thrown or if you need a new fuse
Make sure your thermostat is connected and working
Finally, if you still have no luck with your heating system, call Warner Service. One of our certified technicians will examine your individual system and put you on the right track towards a warm and comfortable winter.
