Whether you’re a lifelong Tide supporter or diehard Gain fan, chances are that you use the same detergent you recognized as a kid. What if it’s time to switch things up to help the environment and save money on your energy bill?

Sometimes, green laundry isn’t always so black and white. The names of certain detergents may include "green," "eco," or "natural," but there's no federal standard or required verification for these terms.

If the label has the USDA Organic seal, third-party verification and at least 95 percent organic ingredients are required. Bonus: The other 5 percent of inorganic ingredients shouldn’t pose risk to human health or the environment. Here are a few of our favorite eco-friendly laundry products:usda-organic.png

Eco Nuts Organic Laundry Detergent. Featured on Shark Tank, this USDA Organic product uses “nuts,” which are actually dried berries from a tree found in the Himalayan region of India. These berries contain saponin, a natural cleaning agent that gently and effectively cleans various fabrics. It contains no other chemicals and is safe for those with nut allergies. Put four to five “nuts” in a cloth bag, and toss in the washer.

Ecos Free & Clear Laundry Detergent. This laundry product is free of 1,4 Dioxane; petrochemicals; phosphate; and formaldehyde. While guarding colors and gently cleaning fabrics, coconut oil-based Ecos is ideal for High Efficiency (HE) front and top-loading washers. Its ultra concentration is designed to quickly remove ground-in dirt and stains with only one ounce per HE load.

Ecover Zero Powder. In tests done by The Sweethome, this was the most effective fragrance and dye-free detergent, removing everything from blood to grass to oil. It’s also not tested on animals, omits optical brighteners, and is cheaper than top commercial detergents at 21 cents per load.

FIT Organic Laundry Detergent. This product is made without synthetic detergents, polymers, or brighteners; 1,4 Dioxane; or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It’s also not animal tested and provides extra concentration with soap that's made from plant-based oils and natural minerals. There’s also a version for baby clothes.

Greenshield Organic Laundry Detergent. This clear product offers no synthetic preservatives, GMOs, or other harmful chemicals. There’s also a sensitive care version for baby clothes to keep your little one safe.

NaturOli Soap Nuts and Soap Berries. This product contains USDA Organic soap buds and berries. The saponin-rich nuts are harvested in the forests of India and Nepal, deseeded, and packed in a reusable muslin bag with a vial of extremely concentrated juice. Use the nuts to wash and the liquid to pre-treat tough stains or lingering smells.

Rebel Green Fresh Laundry Detergent. This plant- and pure essential oil-based laundry detergent is natural, biodegradable, and free from harmful chemicals and toxins, including phosphates, phthalates, parabens, and dyes. It’s a hypoallergenic laundry detergent for sensitive skin.

Rebel Green also offers USDA Organic fabric softener and sport wash and delicates wash laundry detergents.

Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent. One bottle of natural, free, and clear product can wash 99 loads. This hypoallergenic laundry detergent is made of 97 percent USDA Organic biobased product that fights stains and is made for sensitive skin. It has no fragrances, dyes, or artificial brighteners in its plant-based formula that’s dermatologist tested. It's also gluten- and phosphate-free.

Seventh Generation also offers organic laundry detergent packs and baby stain remover spray.
