Water-HeatersStarting this year the U.S. Department of Energy will put into effect new regulations that will require all water heater manufacturers to meet higher energy factor (EF) ratings. Because of on the new requirements, gas, oil and electric water heaters manufactured after April 15, 2015 will be significantly modified. Tankless water heaters will not be affected, as they already meet the new requirements.

How will these changes affect consumers?

  • Higher priced water heaters – up to 35% more expensive
  • Larger water heaters – 2” tall and 2” wider, and in some cases units may be even larger
  • More complex installation requirements
  • Possibly significant home remodeling costs if the installation space is small , such as a closet, crawlspace or attic.
These new regulations are being put in place to improve the energy efficiency of water heaters, which will result in lower energy costs for homeowners.

Is it better to get a new water heater now before these changes happen?

According to manufacturer’s suggested service life, the average lifespan of a water heater is about 8-12 years. Homeowners with water heaters 10 years old or older should consider replacing it now, before the regulations go into effect and costs go up.
